What is your reputation worth?

In business, your reputation is as important as it gets; it is everything! A poor reputation is like a cancerous growth. It will be overlooked or excused initially, but then we soon find causing you irritation, annoyance or possibly minor pay.

Some will seek advice or take some action to deal with it. Some do not notice what is happening or ignore it altogether until it is too late.

Your reputation is not much different. The worst thing you can do to yourself is to ignore negative comments made by your customers or suppliers, as they will cast doubt over your business’ quality or integrity. Not having any positive reviews or only having old reviews is almost as bad.

The challenge

A major problem in the past has been getting on top of such comments. More often than not most comments were generally made during conversations, they were verbal and thus did not travel as fast as they can today but you also never had the opportunity to become aware of them.

Then of course, there are those who will insist on gossip. Gossip is the great undoing of so much good and is the invention of the idle and the inept. Those who participate are generally jealous of your achievements or simply have an axe to grind; they have a personal agenda.

With the coming of social media and public review websites, it has all become so much easier.

People have found a sounding board, a vehicle through which they can share their feelings and experiences in dealing with you — whether they be good or bad. This in fact is great news. But already I hear you asking “What about those negative reviews left up there?”.

Let me say that it is not just about negative reviews. You need to be equally mindful of having no reviews or only reviews that are not current. Either of these two situations can also be harmful to your business’ online reputation.

The real challenge

Typically, many people’s first reaction to encouraging reviews is that someone is going to post a negative review, that it does not have to be true and they cannot stop this.

What we all need to understand is that if someone does wish to do this then they will find somewhere to leave their comments whether it be on your reviews site or somewhere else on the Internet. There are ways in which you can turn a negative review into a positive. Let us also not forget, the review may have genuine grounds in which case your customer may see something you as the business owner doesn’t.

The REAL challenge you face is not how to encourage reviews but instead, how you can strategically manage your online reputation.

Doing so ensures that;

  • you have processes in place that make it easy for your customers to leave a positive review
  • enables you to manage negative comments
  • provides you with a mechanism that lets you measure the success of your effort.

We recently put one of our clients onto this concept setting up some processes assisting them to actively seek reviews from their customers. After a couple of months they were not only receiving good reviews but in fact were generating new business as a direct result of those reviews or through the simple process of chasing up such reviews.

In a study released by Sensis in 2016, they found that 60% of Australian social media users read reviews before making a purchase. Also, 58% will check up to 5 reviews before making such a purchase decision.
